For this craft, we purchased these die cut people purchased at a teacher's supply store such as Mardel's; though you could easily find a gingerbread man type of pattern on the internet.  The kids cut Eve's clothes out of animal print tissue paper and glued them on using a glue stick.  For Adam's clothes, they used a leaf stamp. When they were finished, the children drew hair or glued yarn hair on each one (not pictured here).

Altoid Tin Creation Game

Genesis 1

Materials:

• 1 Altoid Tin for each person
• 1 frozen juice lid for each person
• 1 number mold
• Plaster of Paris and water
• Different types of scrapbook paper that will match the days of Creation
• Scissors
• E6000 glue (or any other glue that will glue a magnet to the plaster piece)
• 7 magnets for each person
• Animal, people, and fish (possibly moon and stars as well) stickers for each person
• 7 colors of Acrylic paint
• Paint brushes
• something to cover the table that can get messy

Instructions:

A few days before class:

1. Mix a small amount of the Plaster of Paris according to the directions. Don't mix a huge amount, as it will dry while waiting to be poured into the mold.
2. When pouring the Plaster into the mold, I prefer putting the plaster in a ziploc bag and cutting of a small portion of one corner. The plaster can then be poured into the mold easily and more controlled like frosting a cake.
3. After the plaster is dry, take the numbers out of the mold and glue a magnet on the back of each number.  Stick a set of numbers to one juice lid.
4. Cut out circles from scrapbook paper that will fit just inside the juice lid. Make one pattern and you can cut several at a time.  You could use a Cricut to cut the circles too. Match the paper with what was created on that day. For example, grass paper for Day 3.
5. For the top of the Altoid tin, we cut a notepad page that looked like the earth.
6. Place one juice lid with the 7 unpainted numbers, stickers (animal, people, and fish), and 7-8 scrapbook paper circles inside an Altoid tin.

When you get to class:

1. When you get to class, cover the table with something to protect it such as a trash bag or paper. 
2. Let the children paint the numbers with a different color on each number.
3. Let them dry.
4. Let the children put the stickers on the scrapbook paper they go with.
5. Play the game.  Have the children put one scrapbook circle on the juice lid.  Have them put the number that matches that Day of Creation.  Make it a race if you wish.
6. Let the children take them home and teach a friend how to play.

Peek a Boo Box

Peek Box for Creation

This box is a fun way to teach about creation.  I like to show the children the box with the lid closed like the first picture.  I build anticipation by asking them what is in the box and then looking inside and getting excited.  I tell them that inside the box there is a picture of something that God made.  When the children look at it, they look into the hole at the end of the box marked by a red arrow in the second picture.  I open the small section of the box lid to let light in and they are thrilled to see the picture of the family or animal or plant or whatever the picture is.  I change the picture and do it again.  The children get very excited about what is in the box each time!

 Materials:

• Shoebox with removable lid
• Black spray paint
• Pictures from computer
• Clear plastic of some kind or page protector 
• Tape or hot glue
• Scissors (and possibly an exact-o knife)

Instructions:

• Spray paint the shoebox and lid black inside and out.
• Tape or glue a clear pocket on the inside of one end of the box to keep the picture in place. :eave the top of the pocket open to insert pictures. (I use leftover lamination or a page protector.)
• On the opposite end of the shoebox, cut a rectangle to be a peek hole (like the top picture). I used an exact-o knife.
• Print out a variety of really cute pictures (animals, plants, people, sun, moon, stars, clouds, etc.) small enough to fit inside the pocket in the shoebox. Laminate if desired.
• Cut a slit in both sides of the shoebox lid about 3 inches from the end.  Fold the lid up like in the middle picture.
• Put one of the computer pictures in the pocket inside the shoebox.
• Peek inside.

Creation CDs

I made these from old CD's.  One or two of them were made from the clear CD's that come one the top of the package of new CD's.  I cut a round piece of felt the same size as the CD and glued it on a CD.  Then I used a die cut machine to cut out felt pieces that would help tell what was created on that day.  The kids put the pieces on the felt CD as you tell the story.  The neat thing is that they all stack up and store very easily.

Night Night Peek-a-boo Book

The children really enjoy this little Peek-a-boo book.  They love looking under each flap to see what is there (even though they were the ones who put the stickers there).  This is a small sampling of the book.  For a full page with photos of how the completed book is done, click here.
I die cut some pieces for the children to tape on to become the flaps.  (I have used the Cricket machine for this as well.) The pieces are flowers, trees, waves, rocks, etc.  The children then put the animal stickers under the flaps and fold the flaps closed.  Then they put star stickers on the top of each page to make a starry night.
The words are "Night night little ______ God loves you.  He watches over you all night through."  This is a song to the tune of "Baa, Baa Black Sheep." (The song was adapted from "Good Night Little ___" from See and Know Bible Songs by Lois Whitaker at www.seeandknow.com. Used with permission.)
When the book is complete, we sing each page.  The kids are thrilled to see what is under each flap!

God Made Me Flipchart

These are photos of a flipchart I made to go with the story of Creation.  The flipchart is entitled "I  Am Special".  On the back of each page it says, "God made me special.  God made my ____."  The blank is filled in by whatever is on the front.  "God made my eyes."  "God made my feet." And more.

Creation Game

Children have fun playing this game made from a plastic serving dish from a dollar type store and small items such as animals, clouds, moon, stars, plants, fish, etc. cut from fun foam.  Each portion of the dish has the number of a day of Creation.  Children sort the many fun foam pieces into the correct spot.  If it was made on day 1, it goes in the numeral 1 spot.  If it was made on day 5, it goes in the numeral 5 spot.

These stackable cups help the children remember what was created each day; and they love making them!

To make the numbers, I printed them onto circle labels from Avery found at an office supply store.  To make many of the stickers, I found the pictures I wanted and printed them on small return address labels.  I made the words using small return address mailing labels as well.  For the 7th day, I just used a gold cup and no stickers.

The kids really enjoy putting on all the stickers, stacking them and unstacking them in order as we sing songs about creation.

I found this really cool glow in the dark sand at the pet store.  (Make sure it has the glow in the dark sticker or says "Glow in the Dark" on the package.)  I let the children put tiny drops of white glue all over a piece of black construction paper to be the stars.  I put this sand into a salt shaker and let the kids shake the sand onto the glue spots like they would apply glitter.  They lift the paper to let the excess slide off.  They have a paper of many, many, many stars which actually glow in the dark.  We turn off the lights and see the stars.

Hint:  To make it glow in the dark right away, leave the sand out in the light to "charge".  When the sand stops glowing, just "charge" it again by putting it in the light for quite a while.

Another hint:  I usually put a tub or a tray under the paper to catch the excess sand.  It's easier to clean up that way. Pin It

Flipchart from Border

I found this border at a local teacher supply place.  It makes a great little flipchart.  I just cut the pieces apart, glued them in groups on different pages, and used my label machine to make the words.  (You could just as easily type up the words, cut them out, and glue them on.)  It's a simple flipchart I use when teaching creation.  I like it because the people are of many different cultures and nationalities.

The same concept could be used if you find a border with animals on it.  You could make a small flipchart about Noah's ark and the animals that went on the ark.

When we were learning about the animals God created, we let the kids help make one of these noisy chickens.  To make this you will need the following materials:

a plastic cup

red felt

yellow felt

cotton string

googly eyes

a small piece of a kitchen sponge

Get your cup and poke a small hole in the bottom.  Put one end of the string through the hole and tie a large knot on the end that is on the outside of the cup.  Pull the string until it is almost tight, but don't pull the knot through the hole.  Put a piece of duck tape or clear packing tape over the knot and  string on the outside of the bottom of the cup to hold it in place.

Turn the cup over to look like the top picture.  Cut out the red felt for the comb of the chicken and the yellow felt for the beak. (I just cut a diamond shape and folded it in half for the beak.) Glue those pieces on, then glue on the googly eyes.  Let it dry. 

When it is dry, get your tiny sponge piece wet and squeeze out any extra water.  Fold the sponge in half.  Place the string in the middle of the folded sponge. (If this were a sandwich, the sponge would be the bread and the string would be the meat.) Put the sponge as far inside the cup as you can reach while still holding onto the sponge and the string like the second picture.

Third picture - the noise!  Hold onto the top of the cup.  Squeeze the sponge while pulling it with a jerking motion down the string (Don't squeeze too hard or you will put the string out of the cup!).  If you do this right, it will sound like a chicken!  The kids had a blast making these work! 

Hint:  If you are not getting the right sound, check to make sure you are holding the sponge tightly enough around the string, and that the sponge is damp enough.  If the sponge is too dry, it won't work.

Creation Sticks for Young Children

I purchased the little wooden pieces at a craft store.  They were already painted except for the white circle.  I hot glued the wooden pieces to a large popsicle stick - one creation on each side.  To make Adam and Eve, I purchased a round  unpainted wooden piece and painted it green.  I cut out Adam and Eve out of fun foam and their clothes out of fabric that would look like animal skin.  I added doll hair. As we sang a song about creation, the children held up the stick with the piece that we are singing about. After doing this several times, the little ones got really good at knowing which one came next.
